The virtual option is offered by Wisconsin Extension’s Statewide Master Gardener Program. Details can be found at

Some say the in-person format is better because the course fee is less and classmates are better able to share information and create more community connections. Others are willing to pay the greater fee for the online version in order learn at their own pace without the need to appear in person following a fixed class schedule.
NOTE: The class (whether in-person or virtual) is open to everyone who wants to know more about gardening. You don't have to commit to becoming a master gardener before you enroll.
The second step is to complete the Onboarding course (January-March) that introduces you to the requirements of the Wisconsin Extension Master Gardener Program (about 5 hours). That's it. You are all set to join us to volunteer in our community.
"I get to use my frugal and artistic personality to share my joy of growing plants, both for good nutrition for my family and to provide habitat for pollinators and wildlife. How fantastic to share and learn this with like-minded people and gardeners-want-to-bees! It is an ongoing fun, inventive, creative, nurturing, social and educationa

How fantastic to share and learn this with like-minded people and gardeners-want-to-bees! It is an ongoing fun, inventive, creative, nurturing, social and educational journey that fulfills all five of my senses."
"I highly recommend this program. Our mission is to educate on best horticultural practices and to volunteer throughout our community. I enjoy my friendships with our group’s members. It’s a privilege to meet community members while I volunteer at our events, project gardens and educational workshops."
"Back in 2017, my new home construction budget was depleted. By the time the home was completed and it was time to landscape, I knew it was going to be a DIY project. The horticultural education course taught me so much about plant selection and landscaping. Along the way, I have met many members who have become friends and who share my goal of improving our community through gardening and education."
We know how to have fun!
We get together for gardening-focused outings, too. Past activities include tours of local nurseries and a peony farm. Sometimes we gather to make things for our own gardens like garden stepping stones or garden stakes. We have an annual social when we gather over dinner to catch up with members’ efforts in maintaining our various project gardens.
In May 2023, our volunteers planted new shrubs on the grounds of the museum located at 700 N. 12th Street, Wausau, WI 54403.
We had fun participating in this fun family event located in Mosinee's River Park. Children enjoyed our free planting area while area gardeners purchased our locally grown perennials.
Over the years, we have been pitching in to assist at the events of area non-profits when those events align with our mission and vision. We are able to do this on relatively short notice, depending on our ability to staff the event.
